Along with Yutong, two other Chinese companies — BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd. — also participated in the tender.
Yutong was selected as the winner, as it "offered solutions that fully met the stated requirements," according to Toshshahartranshizmat JSC.
The electric buses will be used to expand the existing fleet on current city bus routes, as well as on new routes.
On February 12, the Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, met with Xu Peng, Vice President of International Marketing at Yutong Bus, to discuss the current tasks related to fleet renewal and the development of public transportation in the country.
Both parties exchanged views on the progress of the project to procure 200 electric buses and also discussed plans for a future project to acquire an additional 1,000 buses for Tashkent.
The Minister of Transport stressed the importance of improving the service and maintenance provided by the Chinese company, "in light of the growing number of Yutong buses and electric buses now operating in Uzbekistan."
In July 2024, Ilkhom Makhkamov outlined plans to procure 1,000 buses for regional centers and 200 electric buses from BYD for the capital. In mid-January, the Minister of Transport confirmed the President’s directive to deliver an additional 1,000 new buses to Tashkent in 2025.
