Kamilov is a seasoned diplomat with decades of experience. He previously served as Uzbekistanās Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2003, and again from 2012 to 2023. Between 2003 and 2010, he was Uzbekistanās Ambassador to the United States, and from 2010 to 2012, he held the position of Deputy Foreign Minister.
In March 2022, during a plenary session of the Senate, Kamilov responded to a question regarding Uzbekistanās stance on the war in Ukraine. He stated that Uzbekistan recognizes Ukraineās territorial integrity and sovereignty, does not recognize the self-proclaimed republics in Donbas, and supports the immediate cessation of military operations in Ukraine. Shortly after these remarks, he stepped down from his ministerial post, officially due to health-related reasons.
In June of the same year, it was announced that he had been appointed as the Special Representative of the President on Foreign Policy Issues ā a role he held until his recent promotion to presidential advisor.
