Lithuania extradites fraud suspect to Uzbekistan

A man wanted for fraud and tracked via Interpol channels has been extradited from Lithuania to Uzbekistan — the first such extradition between the two countries.

For the first time, a suspect wanted for fraud has been extradited from Lithuania to Uzbekistan, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, citing the National Central Bureau of Interpol.

The individual had been placed on international wanted lists through Interpol channels and was located within Lithuanian territory. He was detained there and placed in custody pending an extradition review.

The man is charged under Article 168 of Uzbekistan’s Criminal Code (Fraud).

“After satisfying the request submitted by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Uzbekistan, the Lithuanian side made the decision to extradite the individual for prosecution and sentencing in connection with the crime committed,” the statement said.

Upon his return to Tashkent, the suspect was handed over to law enforcement officers.

The ministry added that this case marks the first instance of practical cooperation on extradition procedures between the National Central Bureaus of Interpol in Tashkent and Vilnius.
