Uzbekistan may join global MBIR nuclear research project by year-end

Belarus, China, and Uzbekistan are actively negotiating their accession to the international consortium for the construction of the Multipurpose Fast Neutron Research Reactor (MBIR), which is currently being built in the city of Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk Region. This was announced by Vasily Konstantinov, Director of International Scientific and Technical Projects at Rosatom.

"Although the reactor is still under construction, we are already establishing an international scientific platform based on it. Currently, more than 20 foreign countries and organizations are involved in this platform. Active negotiations are underway with China, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. We expect them to join the consortium by the end of this year," Konstantinov stated.

In May, it was revealed that Vietnamese scientists would also take part in research at the reactor. This became possible following the signing of an interagency roadmap between Rosatom and Vietnam for the development of nuclear technologies through 2030.

The MBIR is a fourth-generation fast neutron research reactor with a capacity of 150 MW. Once operational, it will become the most powerful reactor of its kind in the world. The reactor is being constructed at the site of the State Scientific Center Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (JSC SSC RIAR), which is part of Rosatom’s scientific division.
