Bribe backfires: Prosecutor’s office employee in Khorezm promised to quash case for $3,000, now faces jail himself
A senior investigator from the Urgench city prosecutor’s office has been arrested after allegedly accepting a bribe of $3,000 and other goods in exchange for halting a criminal investigation. When the case was eventually sent to court, the investigator was forced to return the illicit “reward.”

According to the State Security Service (SSS), the investigator misused his official position to extort money from a local resident in return for assistance with a criminal case.
It was revealed that the prosecutor’s investigator demanded $3,000 from the individual in exchange for stopping a criminal investigation initiated by the regional department of the General Prosecutor’s Office. The case was under the jurisdiction of one of his colleagues, and the suspect was promised that it would be closed without indictment or referral to court.
In return for his “services,” the investigator received $1,000 in cash, 10 million UZS, a safe worth $1,000, and an office desk valued at 1.3 million UZS.
However, when the individual discovered that the case had not been closed but was instead submitted to the court with formal charges, he demanded the return of his money and the property.
The investigator was apprehended by agents of the Khorezm regional branch of the State Security Service and the regional prosecutor’s office at the moment he was returning $1,000, the safe, and the desk.
A criminal case has been initiated, and the accused prosecutor’s employee has been placed in pre-trial detention.
