Uzbekistan partners with Russia to advance nuclear oncology treatment

Uzbekistan will establish a Nuclear Medicine Center in partnership with Russia to strengthen the country’s oncology services, according to the Uzatom Agency.

The announcement follows the signing of a framework agreement between Uzatom and the S. Berezin Medical Institute during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025). The project will be implemented in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health.

According to Uzatom, the agreement is aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation in high-tech medicine, with a focus on nuclear medicine to improve cancer diagnostics and treatment in Uzbekistan.

“The agreement provides for the creation of a Nuclear Medicine Center equipped with PET/CT, a cyclotron, MRI, CT scanners, a gamma knife system, a cyber knife, or a high-precision linear accelerator. It also includes the establishment of a radiopharmaceutical laboratory, radionuclide therapy, and the expansion of isotope-based diagnostics,” the statement said.

Ahead of the agreement, Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev, Director of Uzatom, visited a modern oncology clinic and Proton Therapy Center to study the institute’s infrastructure and technological capabilities.
