About the tragic crash

On June 12, 2025, a catastrophic plane crash occurred near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, involving Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London’s Gatwick Airport. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, took off at 10:06 AM local time but lost contact just two minutes later at 10:08 AM, as reported by Flightradar. The aircraft crashed into a residential area near the airport, resulting in no survivors among those onboard. This marked the first major accident involving a Boeing Dreamliner, a modern aircraft known for its fuel efficiency and reliability, delivered to Air India in January 2014.

The crash site also claimed lives on the ground, with Reuters reporting at least 30-35 bodies recovered from the debris. The passenger manifest included 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian citizen, with 217 adults and 11 children onboard. Social media footage captured the plane’s final moments and thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Air India confirmed the incident, promising further details, while rescue operations continue. The tragedy, coupled with Boeing’s history of technical issues with the Dreamliner, including a 2013 grounding due to battery fires, led to an 8% drop in Boeing’s stock prices in early U.S. trading.
