Supreme Court approves arrest of Khanabad judge accused of fraud and bribery
According to information released by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, the chairman of the Criminal Court of Khanabad city was detained while receiving a bribe in exchange for promising to reduce a prison sentence handed down by another court.

The press service of the Supreme Court reported that a pre-trial detention measure was applied to the judge in question.
At a plenary session of the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General’s request to initiate criminal proceedings against the court chairman, identified as Yu.E., was reviewed. The charges include paragraph “a” of part 4 of Article 168 (Fraud) and paragraph “a” of part 3 of Articles 28 and 211 (Bribery) of the Criminal Code. The plenary session granted approval for initiating the case and taking the judge into custody.
Case materials indicate that Yu.E. had promised the relatives of a convicted individual to help mitigate the prison sentence issued by another court. He was caught red-handed by law enforcement officers while accepting $30,000 from the convict’s mother.
“The Supreme Court is taking all necessary measures to combat corruption within the judiciary and to purge the system of dishonest officials,” the statement said.
Earlier, the Supreme Judicial Council had granted permission to prosecute Yu.E. and suspended his powers as a judge. The Council also emphasized that, in accordance with the principles of investigative secrecy and the presumption of innocence, further details of the case would not be disclosed. It also noted that many social media posts regarding the case were exaggerated or misleading.
