Consumers reimbursed 50 billion UZS after utility overcharges

The Competition Committee initiated over 400 cases against natural monopoly entities in 2024, targeting unjustified price increases and other violations, according to the regulatory authority’s press service.

Most investigations focused on unjustified price increases by enterprises and measures to prevent such practices. The Committee also prioritized consumer rights protection and the regulation of natural monopolies.

As a result, orders were issued for refunds and payment recalculations benefiting more than 200,000 consumers. The total amount returned to citizens reached approximately 50 billion UZS.

For instance, the Committee ordered Uzsuvtaminot to return 7 billion UZS to consumers due to overpayments. Additionally, Regional Electric Networks and its branches were found to have collected 5 billion UZS in unjustified revenue.

In February 2024, the Competition Committee discovered that Elkimyo-Suvtaminot, a water supply company operating in the Navoi region, had raised prices without prior notice. The excessive revenue generated from this violation amounted to over 200 million UZS.
